FAQ and format details
Why convert Word to PDF?
You are on a machine without Word, you do not want to send the file to a cloud converter, or you need a quick packet from a manuscript. If the PDF must look exactly like the .docx (letterhead, anchored figures, page numbers), print from Word or LibreOffice instead — those programs own the layout engine.
How this conversion runs
Mammoth produces HTML. pdf-lib paginates that reading order on US Letter in Times. Headers/footers from Word are already gone at the Mammoth step. Images without data URLs become alt-text lines.
Keep in mind for Word → PDF
This is a fidelity drop on purpose: Word page geometry never enters the hub. Multi-column newsletters will become a single column. For a better PDF from the same source, Word→HTML then print from the browser, or open the DOCX in LibreOffice and export PDF.
After you have a PDF file
Skim every page for missing figures and '?'. If it is a contract, use an office suite. If it is a blog draft, this PDF is often enough. Word→EPUB is the better reading format for long manuscripts.
Why doesn't it look like Word's PDF export?
Word's exporter uses its layout engine. This site uses an HTML reading order and standard PDF fonts. They are different products with different honesty about what they keep.
Are bookmarks created from headings?
Not yet. Headings are larger text on the page, not an outline panel in Acrobat.

About Microsoft Word (Office Open XML) and PDF
Source file
Microsoft Word (Office Open XML)
The default Word format since 2007: a ZIP package of XML parts for body text, styles, media, and document settings.
DOCX (Office Open XML WordprocessingML) replaced the binary .doc format. It is the interchange format for business documents: resumes, contracts, manuscripts. Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, Pages, and OnlyOffice all read and write it. Macros live in a sibling .docm type, which this converter does not execute or emit.

Catalog notes
Destination file
A page-description format that paints glyphs and graphics onto fixed pages. Universal for print, archival, and sharing.
PDF (Portable Document Format) describes pages, not a flowing document tree. Incoming PDFs are reconstructed as HTML: designed pages keep positioned text, fonts, images, and vectors; simpler reading documents become flowing articles. Export to PDF paints HTML onto pages via pdf-lib. Pixel-perfect Word/InDesign layout is not the goal.
