Why convert OpenDocument to PDF?

A kiosk or Chromebook that can run this website but not LibreOffice. A quick 'send me a PDF' of an ODT you were sent. If the PDF must match the official letterhead, open Writer.

How this conversion runs

ODT → HTML reading order → pdf-lib Times, US Letter. Draw frames and headers are already gone. Standard fonts only.

Keep in mind for OpenDocument → PDF

Low-medium fidelity versus Writer → PDF. That is the honest product. Images may be placeholders. Columns collapse.

After you have a PDF file

If it is good enough, send it. If not, LibreOffice export or browser print of ODT→HTML. For e-readers, ODT→EPUB.

Can you use the PDF already inside some ODTs?

No. We do not look for an embedded print preview. We rebuild from text.

Are bookmarks created?

Not yet. Outline-level headings are larger type, not Acrobat bookmarks.

OpenDocument Text

The ISO text format used by LibreOffice Writer and OpenOffice: a ZIP of XML, the open counterpart to DOCX.

ODT is part of the OpenDocument family (ODS spreadsheets, ODP presentations). Governments and open-source shops standardize on it. Internally it is content.xml plus styles, metadata, and media. Conversion through HTML maps text:h / text:p / tables onto HTML equivalents.

Catalog notes

  • FODT (flat XML OpenDocument) is not yet a separate type; save as ODT first.
  • ZIP collision with DOCX/EPUB is resolved by checking mimetype or META-INF/manifest.xml.

PDF

A page-description format that paints glyphs and graphics onto fixed pages. Universal for print, archival, and sharing.

PDF (Portable Document Format) describes pages, not a flowing document tree. Incoming PDFs are reconstructed as HTML: designed pages keep positioned text, fonts, images, and vectors; simpler reading documents become flowing articles. Export to PDF paints HTML onto pages via pdf-lib. Pixel-perfect Word/InDesign layout is not the goal.
