FAQ and format details
Why convert Markdown to OpenDocument?

Public-sector and open-source shops often refuse DOCX as a canonical format. If your source of truth is Markdown (docs-as-code) but the records office wants ODT, this is the bridge that does not require a Windows copy of Word.

How this conversion runs

GFM → sanitized HTML → text:h / text:p / lists / tables inside content.xml, plus a small styles.xml for bold and italic. YAML front matter never becomes a Writer heading. The ZIP follows the ODF mimetype-first rule.

Keep in mind for Markdown → OpenDocument

Markdown's job is structure, not page layout. You will not get Writer master pages, indexes, or bibliographic databases from a README. Include files and MkDocs snippets are not expanded — only the file you drop is converted.

After you have a OpenDocument file

Open in LibreOffice, apply a template, and export PDF from Writer if print quality matters. Google Docs can import ODT with style remapping. Do not treat the ODT as a second source of truth; edit Markdown and reconvert.

Can I convert a whole MkDocs project?

Not as a folder. Convert one .md at a time, or build the site to HTML and use HTML→ODT on a single article export.

What about Markdown footnotes?

Standard GFM as parsed here does not implement footnotes. They will appear as literal [^1] unless you preprocessed them to links.

About Markdown and OpenDocument Text

Source file

Markdown

A lightweight plain-text syntax for structured writing that compiles to HTML. The lingua franca of README files, wikis, and note apps.

Markdown stores documents as readable plain text with a small set of punctuation conventions for headings, emphasis, lists, links, and code. GitHub-Flavored Markdown (GFM) adds tables, strikethrough, task lists, and fenced code blocks. Conversion through HTML is a natural fit because Markdown was designed as an HTML shorthand.

Destination file

OpenDocument Text

The ISO text format used by LibreOffice Writer and OpenOffice: a ZIP of XML, the open counterpart to DOCX.

ODT is part of the OpenDocument family (ODS spreadsheets, ODP presentations). Governments and open-source shops standardize on it. Internally it is content.xml plus styles, metadata, and media. Conversion through HTML maps text:h / text:p / tables onto HTML equivalents.
