Why convert HTML to OpenDocument?
Governments, universities, and EU-adjacent workflows often mandate ODT rather than DOCX. If you drafted in a CMS or exported from a browser, HTML→ODT gets you into Writer without a round-trip through Microsoft Word, which is where formatting surprises usually appear.
How this conversion runs
Blocks become text:h, text:p, text:list, and table:table elements with OASIS namespaces. Bold, italic, strike, and sub/sup are named text styles in styles.xml. PNG/JPEG/GIF data URLs are stored under Pictures/ and referenced from draw:frame. The ZIP stores mimetype uncompressed first, which is what the ODF spec requires so Writer recognizes the file.
Keep in mind for HTML → OpenDocument
Master pages, Writer-specific frames, and tracked changes are not generated. CSS grid/flex layout dies at the HTML sanitizer. Images that are not data URLs cannot be fetched from the network, so they become alt-text placeholders. For a Word-centric office, HTML→DOCX will feel more familiar.
After you have a OpenDocument file
Open the .odt in LibreOffice Writer and apply a house template if you have one. Writer can export PDF with better print control than this site's HTML→PDF path. Google Docs and Word can import ODT; they will remap styles.
Is this the same as saving HTML from Writer?
No. Writer's HTML export and this ODT builder are different code paths. This file is a real ODT package, not an HTML file with an .odt suffix.
Can I include fonts?
Not in this converter. Writer will use its default fonts unless you embed fonts later inside LibreOffice.
